Reidland Middle School students have a new opportunity to explore careers through hands-on learning with the addition of a Paxton/Patterson lab. McCracken County Public Schools is looking to add similar labs at Heath Middle School and Lone Oak Middle School next school year.
The lab introduces students to career possibilities through interactive, real-world learning experiences. Paxton/Patterson’s programs help students discover their interests and strengths while exploring fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), health sciences, architecture and construction.
Through career exploration, students can connect what they learn in the classroom with future opportunities while developing critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork skills. Introducing these experiences in middle school helps students make informed choices about high school courses and career pathways.
The addition aligns with regional efforts to prepare students for emerging careers, including opportunities related to nuclear energy. The West Kentucky Educational Cooperative (WKEC) received a $1.9 million grant from the Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Authority to establish its Nuclear Energy Education & Workforce Plan. McCracken County Public Schools is among the participating districts.
By looking to expand the labs to Heath Middle and Lone Oak Middle next school year, McCracken County Public Schools aims to give more students opportunities to discover their passions, explore potential careers and prepare for the next steps in their education.
