Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon—small, front-yard book exchanges that now number more than 150,000 around the world in over 100 countries, from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. A new Little Free Library located in the bus loop at Reidland Intermediate School is joining that movement to share books, bring people together, and create a community of readers.

The new Little Free Library sits next to a Blessing Box, which provides non-perishable food items, toiletries, and other essentials that families may need.

“Our Little Free Library doesn’t just belong to us—it belongs to our community,” said Kristin Sickling, Librarian Mentor at Reidland Intermediate School.

Mrs. Sickling and Amber Davis, RIS Library Aide, worked together to apply for a grant to bring this opportunity to Reidland. Through the grant, the school received the Little Free Library structure along with $2,000 worth of children’s books.

“It’s our hope that this Little Free Library will bring a little more joy, a little more connection, and a whole lot more books to our community,” added Davis.

The Little Free Library nonprofit organization has been recognized by the Library of Congress, the National Book Foundation, and the American Library Association. Reader’s Digest even named it one of the “50 Surprising Things We Love About America.”

Earlier this year, the organization celebrated its 200,000th Little Free Library somewhere in the United States—and now, the Reidland community is proud to add one more to that growing global network.
