Earlier in the season, McCracken County Lady Mustangs soccer crowned a new all-time leading scorer, as senior Maddy Ledgerwood eclipsed the previous record of 91 set by Maddye Rice.
“It means a lot, and I’m really looking forward to adding more onto it,” said Ledgerwood, reflecting on the milestone. “It’s exciting to break a school record, and it’s something that really helps out the team.”
The record-breaking strike came in the Lady Mustangs’ August 21 matchup against Pope John Paul II, their fourth game of the season. The feat would actually come as a surprise to Ledgerwood, with the senior striker not knowing she had been bearing down on history.
“I didn’t know until after the game, and finding that out was really exciting,” Ledgerwood continued. “They told me after and I was just like, ‘really? I didn’t know I scored that many’. I don’t really pay too much attention to stats, I just go out and play.”
Since then, Ledgerwood has only widened the gap at the top, recently passing 100 career goals with a four-goal night against Paducah Tilghman. For Ledgerwood, continuing to pile on the goals is helping not just this season’s squad, but Lady Mustang teams for years to come, as she hopes to set a record worth chasing for the next generation.
“Records are always meant to be broken,” Ledgerwood continued. “I’m excited to build on it this year to help the team, and to keep teaching the girls that are coming up through the program.”
As for the current Lady Mustangs, their focus is simple as the season rolls along — keep winning.
“All we’re focused on is winning games,” Ledgerwood concluded. “We have some things to work on, but we’re just trying to finish our season strong and get far in the postseason like we did last year.”
As of Friday afternoon, Ledgerwood stands at 103 goals and counting, with 11 games left in the regular season.
