Ahead of a crucial run of district games, the McCracken County Lady Mustangs earned their way back into the win column on Thursday night, striking early and pulling away late for a 9-1 victory over the Mayfield Lady Cardinals.
Although the win may look like it was smooth sailing on paper, the night wouldn’t come without its challenges for McCracken. For much of the 60 minutes worth of action, the Lady Mustangs fell victim to a high defensive line played by the Lady Cardinals, being flagged offside on several occasions, and having multiple goals called back. For head coach Mike Lane, the key to the Lady Mustangs’ victory came in the adjustments made across the night, specifically those made ahead of a six-goal second half.
“It’s something we hadn’t seen from anybody this year, and it took some time for us to really understand what they were up against and do what we were asking them to do,” Lane said on the Lady Cardinals’ defensive approach. “But, once our girls started to take on those adjustments and buy into what we were doing, we saw the results. It took 20 minutes of the second half, and it was game over.”
Even though it would take a handful of attempts for the Lady Mustangs to find a clean way through Mayfield’s offside trap, only five minutes in total would tick off away before their first goal came. Picking up the ball in stride along the midfield, Maddy Ledgerwood would breach the Lady Cardinals’ back line down the right wing, finding Maddie Ault with a cross to the back post for the 1-0 advantage. Hardly another five minutes later, Ledgerwood would create a similar opportunity on a counterattack from the left, this time opting to go for goal herself and rounding the keeper to double the advantage.
While the Lady Mustangs looked prime to run away with things before halftime, extending the lead midway through the half via Savannah Watson, it would be the hosts who finished the half on a high note. Continuing to catch the Lady Mustangs offside, the Lady Cardinals would make the most of a positive spell of possessions late in the half. Having drawn a foul on a run into the box, Nia Haley made no mistake from the penalty spot, cutting the deficit to 3-1 just before halftime.
However, with the halftime adjustments made by the Lady Mustangs on display straight away, the goals would be quick to follow as they closed the evening out in a hurry. Ledgerwood’s second of three goals would come only a few minutes into the second half, kick-starting a stretch of six goals in 20 minutes. In that span, Kaelynn Dick would find the back of the net twice, while goals from Harper Barabas and Emma Hudson rounded out the scoring in the 9-1 win.
“It all came down to adjusting the runs that we made, and not having our forwards run so far ahead as early as they were,” Lane said on the Lady Mustangs’ halftime adjustments. “We did a good job of timing our passes, playing through our [striker] and then working the ball back out wide. Being able to make those weak-side runs while staying onside was big for us.”
Next up for the Lady Mustangs, they’ll have some time to rest over a long Labor Day weekend ahead of two key district matchups. First, they meet Paducah Tilghman this coming Tuesday, before a rematch with the Marshall County Lady Marshals awaits them on Thursday.
“This was good for them. The first half of our schedule has been pretty grueling, so it’s nice to see them able to put plenty of goals on the board tonight,” Lane concluded. “Seeing the work we’ve done in practice start to pay off will really help out the confidence that they already have in their scoring, which is good to have as we’re getting into district play. It’s a good chance for us to build up a little bit of momentum.”
For the Lady Cardinals, they’ll look to get back on track next Tuesday, hosting University Heights.
