McCracken County clinched the Second District Baseball Title on Wednesday with a walk-off single by Lucas Gagnon in the bottom of the seventh inning, beating the Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado 1-0. The title win marks their first since 2023, and their 10th since the school’s inaugural season in 2014.

“It’s been a couple years since we won the district tournament, so we wanted to win that,” McCracken head coach Zach Hobbs said. “Paducah Tilghman played a great game today. The West kid pitch really well. We just got that timely hit when we needed it there in the seventh.”

“It’s awesome to finally get it back,” Lucas Gagnon said. “We hadn’t had it in a couple of years. We had a good game last year, but fell short. It feels good to get it this time.”

The entirety of the game was a pitcher’s duel between Tilghman’s Wesley West and McCracken’s Caden Kern. Each pitched a complete game, as West struck out five while allowing five hits and the game’s lone run. On the other side, Kern picked up the shutout by allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out nine. The effective pitching combined with a clean sheet from both squads made it a highly-competitive ball game.

Finally in the bottom of the seventh, Brady Thompson singled and stole second, leaving the junior Gagnon with a runner in scoring position and two outs. On a 3-1 count, Gagnon delivered with a line drive into left field, where the throw was not in time to get Thompson at the plate, scoring the game’s lone run and giving the Mustangs the district title.

“Hobbs gave me the 3-0 take, and I was kinda mad,” Gagnon said about the final at-bat. “When it was 3-1, I was looking for a pitch to hit, and I got one, so I took it.”

“He was mad I gave him the 3-0 take, so I told him he’s getting it every time if he gets a hit on the next pitch,” Hobbs said. “We green light them sometimes, and that was a spot I thought about it, but when you got guys like Kendrick and Reeves coming up behind him, let’s out some pressure on them. Lucas did a great job and made it happen when it counted.”

Although this district title was a goal set out by the Mustangs this season, this is by far their final title they hope to accomplish. Next week, the Mustangs will continue their hunt for their 12th straight First Region Title, which would earn them a spot in the state tournament as well. Lucas Gagnon believes this team is peaking at the right time, and is coming into the region tournament on a hot streak.

“I think we’re getting hot. We only had four hits that game, but there were a lot of barreled balls that were caught,” said Gagnon about expectations in the region tournament. “We’ve gotten hot a couple times this year, and it’s hard to beat us when we are.”
