For the first time in four years, the McCracken County Lady Mustangs are no longer defending First Region softball champions. That came as a shock to some, including those involved with the program. This year, with an experienced core at the helm, the Lady Mustangs have a clear and defined goal, get back to the state tournament.
“It’s definitely a chip on these five seniors’ shoulders. I promise you that,” head coach Tony Hayden said about the loss to Marshall in the region championship last year. “They’ve worked hard and are proving that in practice, it’s just a matter of getting our hitting to where our pitching is. It’s all coming together now defensively.”
The Lady Mustangs are returning their star pitchers in Addley Leidecker and Addison Dudley. The two combined for nearly all of McCracken’s innings last year, and combined for a record of 31-6. As one of the best pitching staffs in the region, the two allowed opponents to score more than eight runs just one time all of last year, that being to the third best team in Tennessee. Leidecker and Dudley looked to repeat that success this year,
To complement the stellar pitching, McCracken is returning their top three hitters from last year as well. Macy Butler, Ava Knight, and Olivia Lee all batted over .400 last season, and will bring their experience and success into the 2026 season.
“The pitching staff is pretty solid. The only thing we have to do is replace some positions in the infield,” Hayden said. “The outfield’s pretty strong, so offensively, we ought to be pretty tough.“
As they do every year, the Lady Mustangs loaded their schedule up with premier opponents from other states, with plans of trips in the immediate future. On consecutive weekends in late March, they will face some top teams in Illinois on the road. Then for spring break, they will face a tough slate of Alabama teams in Gulf Shores.
“Our number one goal is to get back to the state tournament. That’s number one every year,” Hayden said. “We’ve got a pretty tough schedule in the first four weeks of the season, including going south to Florida and Alabama. So we’ll know quite a bit like we always do when we get back from that spring break trip. Hopefully the end of the year will be better than last year’s end of the year.
McCracken opens their season Friday, March 20 when they host Madisonville-North Hopkins. Their original season opener was schedule for a road trip to Hickman County on Tuesday, but that has been postponed to later in the season.
With a clear goal in mind and a group of key returners with a chip on their shoulder, the Lady Mustangs are in a prime position to contend for another region title. As the season is just around the corner, the schedule they built will prepare them for the postseason and test them in multiple areas to ensure they bring their best in late May.
