Friday night, the McCracken County Mustangs took a huge win over the Christian County Colonels in a blowout, 63-20.
The first quarter saw plenty of action, starting with a touchdown from senior Landon Newman with about 10:40 on the clock. The Mustangs’ extra-point attempt fell short, leaving the score at 6-0. Not long after, McCracken forced Christian County into a fourth-down situation, and the Colonels punted. With 9:07 left, a long pass to Reed Brookshire led to another Mustangs touchdown. This time, the extra point was good, giving McCracken a 13-0 lead.
A little over a minute later, Christian County threw the ball from its own 15, with James Farley catching it and running to the Mustangs’ 7-yard line. About 30 seconds later, Christian County’s Deasian Harris ran the ball in for a touchdown to put the Colonels on the board. They converted the extra point to cut the lead to 13-7.
A few minutes later, with 4:14 on the clock, McCracken’s Brently Gregory caught a pass in the end zone for another touchdown. Near the one-minute mark, Brookshire intercepted a pass, but the Mustangs couldn’t find the end zone before time expired.
Between the first and second quarters, McCracken County honored breast cancer victims and played a video for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The second quarter started with a quick touchdown from Newman with 11:47 remaining. The Mustangs converted a 2-point attempt to push the lead to 28-7. After a series of possessions, McCracken struck again with 7:20 on the clock on a passing touchdown to Jude Lanier. Another good extra point made it 35-7.
Around the 6-minute mark, Christian County struck back with a deep pass to Darius Finch, who ran it all the way in for a touchdown, trimming the lead to 35-14. With 4:34 left, McCracken answered with another passing touchdown to Brookshire, extending the lead to 42-14 after the extra point.
About two minutes later, with 2:43 remaining in the first half, Jakari Matchem scored another Mustangs touchdown. A successful extra point made it 49-14 at halftime.
With a running clock in the second half, McCracken rested most of its starters, turning to its reserves. With 9:44 on the clock, Dawson Hayden intercepted a pass. Exactly two minutes later, he caught another pass, this time for a touchdown. The extra point pushed the score to 56-14.
That was the only scoring in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, Corterrion Turner caught a touchdown pass with 10:24 left. Another good kick made it 63-14.
With 2:27 remaining, Christian County threw from its own 20, and Finch caught the ball around midfield before running it in for another touchdown. The extra point missed, leaving the final score at 63-20.
In the closing seconds, McCracken knelt to run out the clock and seal the win.
McCracken will look to carry the energy from this big win into its game next Friday at Henderson County. Christian County will look to bounce back at home against Hopkinsville.
