Tuesday night served as senior night for the McCracken County Lady Mustangs, as they wrapped up regular season district play against the Community Christian Academy Lady Warriors. The Lady Mustangs would make quick work of CCA in a three-set sweep, closing out an undefeated district schedule with set scores of 25-10, 25-14, and a perfect 25-0 set to cap off the night.

“I thought the energy the girls had coming into tonight was great,” McCracken County head coach Chancie Coleman said. “We’ve got a great group of seniors that are so impactful to this team, they always lead by example, and all of our underclassmen really wanted to make this a senior night they wouldn’t forget.”

The dominance for the Lady Mustangs began straight from the first set, as they quickly built up a lead to open up the action. While the Lady Warriors would pick up a handful of points to stay within striking distance, the Lady Mustangs pulled further away once the score entered double digits, with a string of serves from Caroline Presswood helping to widen the gap. A kill from Regan Hill would close out the first set in short order, with McCracken taking the 1-0 edge in the match with a 25-10 win.

Heading into the second set, the Lady Mustangs rolled their momentum over from the first set, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead with serves from Taylor Dugan.

“We always try to start sets on the front foot, and put our best servers out to start, and Taylor always does a good job of getting things going for us,” Coleman continued, on the Lady Mustangs strong starts. “We’re a team that can take a little bit of time to settle in and get comfortable in a set, so if we can start well and get some early points, we find our rhythm much faster than if we’re chasing teams.”

CCA would quickly erase the deficit, though, once again sticking close behind the Lady Mustangs through the early goings on the set. However, while they’d get within one, trailing 11-10 at one point, the Lady Warriors were unable to take the lead at any point in the set. The Lady Mustangs would claim 14 of the next 18 points to close out the set by a comfortable margin, 25-14.

With a 2-0 lead in the match, the Lady Mustangs quite literally made no mistake when given the chance to close things out. With Dugan serving once again, they would put up 25 unanswered point to seal the sweep with a flawless set.

“I really didn’t notice the score until they called their second timeout, and one of our seniors mentioned to me that we could go 25-0,” Coleman said recounting the final set. “They said they wanted to really lock in and go for it, so we did. Taylor stayed aggressive on her serves, and we were really aggressive with our blocking along the net, too. They wanted it, and went for it.”

With district competition wrapped up, the Lady Mustangs will be right back in action tonight, as they travel to Bowling Green for their final two matches of the season against Greenwood and South Warren.

“These are two teams that are ranked pretty highly in the state right now, and the type of team we want to be playing [before the postseason],” Coleman concluded. “Then we’ll come back here, and get a few more practices in before the district tournament. We’re focused on the speed of our game right now, and trying to play as hard and fast as we can, so we’re ready to make a run in the postseason.”
