Over the weekend, the 2025 Boys Golf State Championship came to it’s conclusion at Bowling Green Country Club, with a local name coming out on top of the field. Heading into the day with the individual lead, McCracken County senior Landon Hunt shot an excellent second round to clinch his state championship on an impressive day for Mustang golf.
“I’m just so grateful to have had this opportunity. I appreciate everybody and everything they’ve done for me so much,” Hunt said, following his second round. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
Coming into the second day, Hunt held a one stroke lead over the competition, shooting a 68 gross score (-4) in his opening round. Hunt would again shoot 4-under-par to pull away from the field during Saturday’s round, finishing with a total two-round gross score of 8-under-par 136, and three strokes clear of St. Xavier’s Luc Kelly in second.
“I had two putts on the fringe on 14 and 15, one was for an eagle, the other was for birdie, and I made both of them. When I made that one on 15, I just had a great feeling about things,” Hunt said, recounting pivotal points of his round. “I don’t always think I’m the best driver of the ball, but over the past two days, I thought I was able to find the fairway well enough to put myself in some good positions. I made a lot of good putts in big moments, and I think that really sealed the deal for me.”
Along with Hunt’s individual performance, the Mustangs would place highly in team competition, finishing in third place behind Madison Central and St. Xavier. The team, which consisted of Hunt, Jack Farmery, Evan Hack, and Dallas Vinson, combined for a total gross score of 597 strokes over two rounds, 21 over par. Tanner Kight would also compete as an individual representing the Mustangs, shooting a gross of 161 over his two rounds.
“It was great for the team to finish well, too.” Hunt said. “We obviously had the goal of winning. We came up short, we just had a couple of great teams in front of us, but we had a great finish and are just as grateful for that.”
