After a challenging start to the season against some of Kentucky’s best opponents, the McCracken County Lady Mustangs soccer team rose above that .500 mark with a dominant 12-0 win over Mayfield on Thursday night.
“I saw a lot better ball movement tonight,” head coach Mike Lane said following the win. “We talked about some stuff since we played Marshall and how we really need to gain an identity, which we really haven’t had this year.”
The Lady Mustangs took care of this game in just 40 minutes of action. Eight different players found the back of the net in the win. Maddy Ledgerwood led the way with four, followed by Anahi Mendoza with two. Madeline Ault, Sephie Warfield, Kiera Tynes, Ava Englert, Lucy Farmery, and Angelli Mendoza were the remaining scorers.
“I’m feeling straight rainbows and sunshines,” Anahi Mendoza said following her two goals. “It feels great. It feels like I actually did something today.
“I think we did really well as a team,” freshman Angelli Mendoza said. “Everyone was really positive today. We all played our best.”
After being tested with a slate of tough opponents to begin the year, the Lady Mustangs players and coaches are optimistic about their squad facing the challenges ahead and making yet another postseason run.
“We started off with a really tough schedule. I think our girls have learned a lot about themselves going through that,” Lane said. “We just wanted to come here against Mayfield and play the way that we want to play and get some momentum going into the next couple of days.”
The Lady Mustangs have that repeat goal in mind of winning the region title like they did in 2023. They say the tools are there; they just have to continue to gel as a cohesive unit to play their best soccer.
“I definitely see us making it out of the region as long as we keep a good mental state,” junior Sephie Warfield said. “I think we can even get past the first round of state and go far.”
The sky is the limit for the battle-tested Lady Mustangs as they move onto the heart of the 2025 season. Their next game will be on Saturday, when they travel to Greenwood to take on the Lady Gators at 6:15 p.m.
The Lady Cardinals will look to bounce back at the beginning of next week also on the road against University Heights.
