Officer Gilbert

McCracken County Public Schools is proud to announce that Heath Elementary School Resource Officer Will Gilbert has been named the Region 1 School Resource Officer of the Year. He was presented with the award on Tuesday, June 9, in recognition of his outstanding service, dedication, and positive impact on students and staff.

Officer Gilbert serves as more than a school resource officer at Heath Elementary. Through his daily interactions, he has become a trusted mentor, encourager, and beloved member of the school community.

As shared by Heath Elementary staff:

"Mr. Gilbert is truly the heart and spirit of Heath Elementary. Whether he's making students laugh in the hallway or building meaningful relationships throughout the day, he brings joy and positive energy wherever he goes. Most importantly, he is deeply committed to the safety and well-being of our students and staff. We could not ask for a better School Resource Officer. Thank you, Mr. Gilbert, for all that you do for Heath Elementary each and every day."

Chief of Police Wes Orazine, who nominated Officer Gilbert for the award, said his commitment to students extends far beyond his official duties.

"SRO Gilbert consistently goes above and beyond in his role, often dedicating his own time and personal resources to ensure students feel valued, included, and part of the Heath Elementary community," said Orazine. "His genuine care, creativity, and dedication have made a lasting impression on both students and staff. He is respected for his commitment to safety and cherished as an integral part of the Heath Elementary family."

Officer Gilbert is known for finding unique ways to connect with students. He celebrates birthdays with cards, stickers, and small treats that make each child feel special. He participates enthusiastically in school fundraisers, volunteers to take pies to the face, dances with students during lunch, and creates memorable experiences that encourage positive behavior.

One of his most popular traditions is the weekly "dance challenge." Students vote on a dance each Monday, and if they demonstrate positive behavior throughout the week, Officer Gilbert performs the winning dance during lunch. He also uses games like UNO to build relationships with students, often incorporating playful surprises that brighten their day.

His dedication has become a family affair. Officer Gilbert's wife helps organize and prepare student engagement activities, while his two adult children, both members of the military, have visited Heath Elementary to speak with students and provide mentorship and encouragement.

"Officer Gilbert exemplifies what it means to serve students with both professionalism and heart," said Superintendent Josh Hunt. "He has built meaningful relationships while ensuring our students and staff feel safe, supported, and valued. We are incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition and grateful for the impact he makes each day at Heath Elementary."

McCracken County Public Schools congratulates Officer Will Gilbert on being named the Region 1 School Resource Officer of the Year and thanks him for his unwavering dedication to the students, staff, and families of Heath Elementary School.
