On Friday, May 3rd, over 100 Reidland Intermediate School 5th-grade students received certificates for completing the DARE program. The curriculum was taught by Campus Police SRO Jon Wentworth over ten weeks, and the topics included responding to bullying, dealing with peer pressure, and making responsible choices. The classes held group discussions about real-life experiences and examples of being a responsible student. The students were also tasked with completing a final essay which mentioned useful information learned during the DARE program, how they have already utilized the DARE decision-making process, and how they plan to use what they have learned to make safe and responsible decisions in the future. Three students (Claire Van Meter, Ella McDowell, and Ruby Bergman) were selected as essay winners and shared their work at the completion ceremony. A special thanks to RIS 5th grade teachers for supporting students during the essay process, and also to MCPS Food Services for providing a tasty and well-deserved afternoon snack for all of the DARE students in attendance.

On April 18, 2nd graders from Lone Oak and Reidland Elementary Schools were visited by Forest Ranger Laura Mehlbauer and her special guest, Smokey Bear! The students learned about wildfire prevention, the duties of forest rangers, and the history of Smokey Bear. Everyone was able to greet Smokey with a high five or fist bump, and two lucky students were selected to model Ranger Mehlbauer's fire response gear for their peers. We would like to thank the Kentucky Division of Forestry for making this exciting experience possible. #McCrackenProud

News from West Kentucky Community & Technical College McCracken County High School teacher recognized for KCTCS award Chris Jones, a history teacher at McCracken County High School, was recently honored with a 2024 KCTCS Pathfinder Award for his dedication to student success. Representing one of 16 Kentucky high school teachers or counselors recognized by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS), Jones was surprised with the award during a special ceremony in his classroom on April 19, by representatives from West Kentucky Community and Technical College. "This award means everything. It means that I'm making a difference to students' futures, their careers," said Jones. "Education is about academics, yes, but also it's about character development, and you try to create good people that are educated, and try to inspire them to have a better life and a better future." Jones, a graduate of Reidland High School, class of 1993, continued his education at Paducah Community College (now WKCTC), where he excelled academically and athletically. Jones continued his education at Murray State University, graduating in 1999, and began his teaching career at Lone Oak Middle School that fall. He moved to Reidland Middle School in 2009, before eventually finding his teaching home at McCracken County High School in 2014. Throughout his career, Jones has been dedicated to creating an environment where students feel valued, empowered, and inspired to reach their full potential. By teaching and modeling good character-building traits, he strives to instill in his students a sense of responsibility, integrity, and empathy, shaping them into not only better learners but better individuals.
