McCracken County High School graduate Jack Nelson represented both MCHS and the Commonwealth of Kentucky on a national stage this week at the 2026 National High School Musical Theatre Awards, better known as the Jimmy Awards, held June 22 at Broadway's Minskoff Theatre in New York City. The Jimmy Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre and bring together top student performers from across the United States for an intensive week of training, rehearsals, and performances led by Broadway professionals.
Nelson earned his place at the national competition after being selected as one of the representatives from the Kentucky Performing Arts Bradley Awards, the regional awards program that serves Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
During the week-long Jimmy Awards experience, Nelson worked alongside more than 100 of the nation's most talented high school performers, participating in master classes, coaching sessions, and ensemble rehearsals before performing on a Broadway stage.
At the conclusion of the event, Nelson was honored with the Outstanding Performance in an Ensemble Award, a distinction presented by the Jimmy Awards creative team. The award recognizes a student who demonstrates exceptional collaboration, professionalism, and commitment throughout the rehearsal process while contributing meaningfully to the success of the ensemble.
"Jack has consistently demonstrated the qualities that make great theatre possible: talent, dedication, humility, and a commitment to supporting those around him," said MCHS Theatre Director Mary Bowden. "We are incredibly proud to see him recognized on a national level for the collaborative spirit he brings to every rehearsal and performance."
Nelson recently graduated from McCracken County High School, where he starred as Curly McLain in the school's award-winning production of Oklahoma!. Earlier this month, he was named Best Actor in a Lead Role at the Kentucky Performing Arts Bradley Awards, earning the opportunity to represent the region at the Jimmy Awards.
His national recognition serves as a testament not only to his individual talent, but also to the strength of arts education and musical theatre opportunities available to students at McCracken County High School.
The entire McCracken County community congratulates Jack Nelson on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to following his future successes both on and off the stage.
