Heath Middle School (HMS) is excited to announce the appointment of Nathan Metzger as Principal. Metzger will assume the role following the retirement of current principal Matthew Blackwell, who will retire at the end of the school year after years of dedicated service to the students, staff, and families of Heath Middle School. With a career spanning over 19 years in education, Metzger brings a wealth of experience and a strong dedication to academic excellence to this role.
Metzger began his career at Heath Middle School in 2007 as a Language Arts Teacher, where he taught 8th Grade Reading and Writing, as well as College and Career Readiness and Financial Literacy. His innovative teaching methods and commitment to student success have been evident throughout his tenure.
In 2013, he transitioned into the role of Curriculum Specialist, focusing on improving instructional practices and curriculum. At the district level, he led professional development and worked to create and manage common assessments.
For the last two years, Metzger has served as Assistant Principal of Core Curriculum and Instruction at McCracken County High School (MCHS). During his time at MCHS, Metzger played a pivotal role in guiding the school's instructional vision and daily operations. Over those two years, the high school has maintained a “Blue” rating—the highest possible accountability and assessment designation awarded by the state of Kentucky. He was heavily involved in laying the groundwork for the school’s transition to an Academy Model in partnership with Ford Next Generation Learning, ensuring that all students receive targeted, career-focused educational pathways.
“My family and I cannot express how thrilled we are to be coming home to Heath Middle School,” said Metzger. “This is a community and a group of people that we love with all our hearts. I am completely honored and humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support and excitement we have received over this announcement. To be asked to return and serve the school where I was educated and my career began is an incredible privilege. I know first-hand the dedication of this building, and I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work alongside this incredibly talented faculty. We live in an amazing place, and I am excited to continue serving the students and future leaders of McCracken County in this new capacity.”
Metzger holds a Master’s degree in English Literature and a Bachelor’s degree in English/Secondary Education from Murray State University. He will complete his Master’s in Educational Leadership this spring.
“Nathan Metzger has a proven track record of leadership, instructional excellence, and a deep commitment to student success,” said McCracken County Public Schools Superintendent Josh Hunt. “His connection to Heath Middle School—as both a former student and educator—combined with his experience at the middle and high school levels makes him the right person to lead HMS forward. We are excited to welcome him into this role and look forward to the continued success of Heath Middle School.”
