McCracken County High School Culinary students recently had the opportunity to put their skills to the test through a real-world partnership with Gold Rush Café — and the results are now being served to customers across the community.
Over the past several weeks, Culinary students were challenged to design an innovative and unique breakfast dish as part of a collaborative competition with the café. After careful judging, one team was selected as the official first-place winner.
The winning team — Owen Schmeiser, Greg Williamson, Elijah Smith, and Kaelob Johnson — created The Golden Sausage Fritter. The dish features a smoked sausage link dipped in a special pancake-style batter and deep fried to create a crispy, crunchy exterior. It is served with maple syrup dipping sauce, along with a choice of potatoes and two eggs cooked to order.
Gold Rush Café is now featuring The Golden Sausage Fritter as a weekly special for a limited time, giving the community an opportunity to experience the students’ creativity firsthand.
“This is the ultimate example of teaching with real-world application,” said Ashley Woodruff, MCHS Culinary instructor. “Students were able to take an idea from concept to creation and see it served to actual customers in our community.”
In an additional show of support, Gold Rush Café is also collecting tips at the register to benefit the MCHS Culinary Program. The funds will help inspire continued creativity and provide resources for future student projects.
McCracken County Schools is proud of these students for their innovation, teamwork, and professionalism, and grateful for community partners like Gold Rush Café who help provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.
Community members are encouraged to stop by Gold Rush Café, try the special, and support these talented students while it is available.
