Kelly Smith's fifth grade class at Lone Oak Elementary made history come to life on February 1st!Each student studied an important historical figure of their own choosing.  Students used many different resources to research their historical figure, practiced memorizing their lines with each other, and then presented a "Living Gallery" that other Lone Oak students could walk through and learn important information about each individual.  The students were in character with costumes and held picture frames to make the gallery more exciting.  The students chose historical figures ranging from King George III, Cleopatra, Abraham Lincoln, to Clara Barton.  Students said that this project not only taught them about the figure they studied but also sparked an interest in history that had not previously been tapped!  They asked, "can we do this again tomorrow?" at the end of the project! Nominations Sought for Governor’s Volunteer Awards
Do you know one of those extraordinary people who give selflessly of themselves to help improve the lives of others by performing good deeds largely unnoticed and wholly without expectation of recognition or compensation?  If so, consider nominating that special person or group for one of the 2009 Governor’s Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service.  To honor these individuals, the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service (KCCVS), an agency of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, is accepting nominations for the 2009 Governor’s Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The award nomination deadline is Monday, Feb. 22.  This is the 15th year for the annual volunteer awards, which recognize and celebrate the contributions of Kentuckians to their fellow citizens. KCCVS hosts a special ceremony in the spring to publicly honor the winners and others who have given back to their communities through volunteering.  Nominations for most awards must focus on service activities completed in Kentucky during 2009. Individuals and groups may be nominated in only one category, and self-nominations are accepted. Award winners from the previous five years are ineligible for the 2009 awards. A panel of distinguished judges reviews and scores nomination applications using a 100-point scale.   Nomination forms are available online for electronic submission from the KCCVS Web site at www.volunteerKY.ky.gov.  For more information, contact the KCCVS office at (800) 239-7404 or e-mail kccvs@ky.gov.

JDC selected to participate in Great Stories CLUB

The McCracken Regional Juvenile Detention Center has been selected to participate with the McCracken Co Public Library in the Great Stories CLUB.  This program pairs a public library with a program that services at-risk kids, and provides a series of books for the student to read and discuss.  The Great Stories CLUB is organized by the American Library Association Public Programs Office (PPO), in cooperation with the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). Major funding for the Great Stories CLUB has been provided by Oprah’s Angel Network.

The Great Stories CLUB is a reading and discussion program that targets underserved, troubled teen populations. The program reaches teens through books that are relevant to their lives, inviting them to read and keep the books, and encourages them to consider and discuss each title with a group of their peers. It seeks to show that reading can be a source of pleasure, a tool for self-exploration, and a meaningful way to connect to the wider world. Its ultimate goal is to inspire young adults who face difficult situations to take control of their lives by embracing the power of reading.
