KDE uses surveys to gain public feedback on Common Core State Standards

FRANKFORT, Ky.) – The Kentucky Department of Education invites educators and the public to review and provide feedback on the draft Common Core State Standards for English/language arts and mathematics.  Kentucky will collect feedback via surveys and submit it to Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) for their consideration as they finalize the standards.  The draft standards are posted at the survey site, or visit http://www.corestandards.org/ to see the drafts. The surveys will be open until March 29. To access the surveys, visit the Kentucky Department of Education’s homepage at http://www.education.ky.gov or the URLs below.

Ronald McDonald House Charities awarded $4,200 to the Commonwealth Middle College to support a trip to Washington, D.C.

Forty-three students and eight faculty, staff and chaperones will visit Capitol Hill, the Smithsonian Institute, the National Archives, Arlington National Cemetery, and monuments, March 13-17. The trip will allow Middle College students to experience lessons in American history, government, arts, science and literature.

The Commonwealth Middle College opened in August 2009. Fifty high school juniors from Marshall and McCracken counties were selected for the first class. Students may earn up to 36 hours of college credit, tuition-free, at West Kentucky Community & Technical College while also completing their high school requirements on campus. Fifty additional high school juniors will join the Middle College in the fall.

Ronald McDonald House Charities supports nonprofit children's programs in the areas of education, health, social well-being, and the cultural arts. The local chapter awarded almost $200,000 to projects in the tri-state area in 2009.

Preschool/Headstart now scheduling registration

The McCracken County Preschool/Head Start office is taking appointments for registration for fall classes. Please call 538-4041 to make an appointment.  Eligible children should reside in the McCracken County School District; must be three or four years of age on or before October 1, 2010; and qualify through state or federal income guidelines.  Children with disabilities or developmental delays may also qualify.  Parents or guardians should bring the following to the registration: child’s certified birth certificate; proof of family annual income (including child support); child’s Social Security card; custody papers (if applicable); and an insurance or medical card.  Children need not be present at registration.  An appointment for screenings will be made for a later date.  Early Head Start applications are also being accepted.  Transportation for preschool is provided by McCracken Co. School System.  Transportation is not provided for Early Head Start.  The McCracken County Preschool/Head Start office is located on the district’s central office campus, 435 Berger Road, Building #3.

Lone Oak fourth graders and eighth graders work together in writing workshop

Ginger Colson’s LOMS 8th grade GT students and Sherrie Kirkpatrick’s LOE 4th grade students collaborated together on writing personal narratives in writing workshop.  Fourth grade students got to hear several 8th grade pieces.  The students completed  peer editing and enhanced their writing by adding in different personal narrative elements.

Heath Middle School student wins Regional Mathcounts

Bradley Baker, a Heath Middle School eighth grader,is the winner of the regional Mathcounts competition.  He is the recipient of a $500 scholarship and a $30 gift certificate for third place in the Countdown Round.  Baker will represent Heath Middle School in Lexington on March 19 and 20 for the state Mathcounts competition. 

LOHS wins District Governor's Cup Championship

Lone Oak High School’s academic team won the Overall Championship at the Second District Governor’s Cup on Feb. 2.   The team also placed Second in Quick Recall and Third in  Future Problem Solving. Heath Middle Future Problem Solving places First in District Governor's Cup Competition

Heath Middle places Second in Academic Showcase

LOMS students advance to state Governor's Cup

Lone Oak Middle School students, Hannah Massa and Rana Edem  will compete at the State Governor’s Cup Competition March 11 in Louisville.  Rana placed second in Math and Hannah placed third in Language Arts at the recent Regional Governor’s Cup.

LOHS Dance Team Places First at State

Lone Oak High School Dance Team recently competed in the Kentucky State Dance Competition. The dance team placed 1st runner up in the Small Group Open Division, for their lyrical.  The also placed 4th runner up for their jazz dance in the Jazz Small Group Division.

LOES student wins Essay  Contest

Fourth grade Lone Oak Elementary student, Lily Moore, has won the Dr. Brad Mills Essay Writing Contest and wins Free Braces!  Lily wrote an essay on how people can help their community.  Dr. Mills and Marcy Parks surprised Lily and her classmates and brought treats and goodies and tee shirts for all of the class when they came to announce that she had won. 

Seventy-five HHS students from  attend Region 1 FBLA Leadership Conference

Seventy-five students from Heath High School attended the Region 1 FBLA Leadership Conference at Murray State University, March 1.  The chapter had 33 students placing first, second, or third in individual and team events.  Hannah Carroll was elected as the Region 1 President for next year and will be serving on the state executive officer team. These students will be competing at the state leadership conference April 15, 16, and 17 at Louisville, KY. MORE

Myra Flood’s Lone Oak Elementary first grade class has weekly “Skype” friends from T.E Baxter Elementary in Midlothian Texas.   This week, students from each class gave a short book report on their favorite book.

HLOE Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Hendron-Lone Oak Elementary celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2 with Soups for Seuss Family Reading Night.  Over 300 people attended and enjoyed soup, chili, grilled cheese and birthday cake.  The Cat in the Hat, Thing 1, and Thing 2 made an appearance and enjoyed all of the storytimes, crafts, and reading going on!  PHOTOS

Heath High Future Problem Solving Team wins Governor’s Cup Regional Championship

 

The HHS Future Problem Solving Team placed First in the Regional Governor’s Cup Competition.  They will advance to compete in the state finals on March 13th.  FPS team members: Jonathan Emmons, Chad Behbehani, Whitney Travis and Kristi Street.

HMS Future Problem Solving (Schubert Moffatt, Adrianna Hendricks, Wyatt Seed and Taylor Romans) team won First Place at the KAAC Regional Competition.  Alexandria Montgomery placed second in Social Studies and thirdin Arts & Humanities.  Bradley Baker placed 5th in Math.  They will be competing in the KAAC Governor’s Cup State Finals in March.

Reidland High School cheerleaders win State Championship three-peat

Reidland cheerleaders won first place in the small co-ed division of the KAPOS state championship for the third straight year.  They also competed in Orlando, Florida last weekend where they placed 4th at the UCA National competition against 37 other teams.

G/T students from Lone Oak Elementary participated in the regional Odyssey of the Mind Competition on Saturday, March 6. They won first place in their division and will advance to state competition March 27 in Richmond. The students who participated in the Food Court problem are Allison Housman, Elizabeth Housman, Laney Yancey, Shelby Sokolik,Ethan Brown, and David Perriello.

Hendron-Lone Oak places second in region will compete at state

Hendron Lone Oak 4th/5th grade Odyssey of the Mind team placed second at the regional competition and will be going to the state competition at Eastern Kentucky University.   Team members include Jenni Moore, Will Harper, Codie Lax, Dylan Knott, Carson Barrow, Anna Ward, and Abbi Farmer.

Heath Elementary hosts Dr. Suess party

Heath Elementary School in conjunction with Title 1 and F.R.S.YC. hosted a “Dr. Suess Birthday Party” Family Reading Night on Monday March 1. Students read with their families, played games, ate and drank punch and cake and took A.R. tests. Over 200 people turned out for the event.

Lone Oak Elementary students are semi-finalists in National Rubber Band contest.

Two Lone Oak Elementary students have been notified by the National Museum of Education that they are semi-finalists in the National Rubber Band Contest.  This contest is looking for young inventors that demonstrate creativity and ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates the use of rubber bands.  According to the National Museum of Education,  Zack Althouse and Taylor Brooks as semi-finalists in the National Rubber Band Young Inventors Contest and will now send their inventions to be judged in the final competition.   This is the first time in the history of the competition that two students from the same school have been selected as semi-finalists. Award winners and runner ups will attend the awards ceremony in Akron, Ohio in May.

The Reidland High School science camp has been postponed until March 19 for Grades 2-8 at Reidland High School from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.  It will begin with a chemistry magic show that will include electrocuting a pickle, gummy bear sacrifice, and fire-breathing.  There will then be eight classes:  biodomes, kites, fingerprinting, kaleidoscopes, root beer floats, making recycled paper, volcanoes, and PE.  The fee of $30 is due by Feb. 5 and includes all supplies, a pizza lunch, and science camp t-shirt.  Registration should be mailed to Jodi Butler, Reidland HS, 5349 Benton Rd, Paducah, KY 42003.
