Grant Seaton, an 8th grader at Lone Oak Middle School, submitted an essay to The Week Junior magazine for a scholarship contest to promote environmentally friendly practices at school. The contest is hosted by the Propane Education & Research Council. The challenge was to submit a drawing with a written response about how they would make their school more sustainable. Grant designed a new outdoor learning space with a garden, bird habitat, native plants, rainwater collection and composting plan. His idea was selected in the 12–14 year-old category! Lone Oak Middle School will receive $2,000 from the Propane Education & Research Council to implement his idea or another sustainability initiative at his school.
