McCracken Sets District Record With 73 Points In Governor’s Cup
[email protected]

The McCracken County High School academic team scored a district-record 73 points in Governor’s Cup District 3 competition, with events being held Tuesday and Saturday at Paducah Tilghman High School.

The district win is the sixth straight for McCracken County. Paducah Tilghman had 32 overall points, while St. Mary had 14. St. Mary won the Hume Sportsmanship Award.

The previous scoring record was 68 points, set by Paducah Tilghman in 2014 and tied by McCracken County in 2015.
Governor’s Cup is a state- wide academic competition that includes written assessment tests in math, science, social studies, arts and humanities and language arts as well as a written composition and team events in quick recall and future problem solving.

Teams score eight points for a first-place finish, five for a second-place finish and three for third place, while students taking written assessments or composition get five points for first place, four for second, three for third, two for fourth and one point for fifth.

No more than three students from a school may take an assessment test in a particular subject, and students can’t take part in more than two assessment subjects.

McCracken students swept the top three places in the math, social studies and arts and humanities tests and took the top two in science and language arts, accounting for 54 of the team’s 73 points. First-place finishes in the quick recall and future problem solving team events brought in 16 more points.

“We take tests regularly, then we see the areas where the kids are weak,” said McCracken academic team coach Tammy Bohannon. “They work on that individually with content study.

“It’s training them harder with harder material earlier in the year. The difficulty (in Governor’s Cup) increases with every next step (from district to region to state). In the past, I’ve spent too much time preparing for district. This year, I flipped it. We’ve been practicing with much harder material earlier.”

Bohannon said the students would prepare with practice tests from the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition, the host organization for Governor’s Cup, as well as with old KAAC tests.

“I also work with them individually, one-on-one,” she said. “They do a lot of self driven work, too.”

Bohannon said this year’s academic team consisted of only five seniors out of 13 team members.

The top two teams and the top five individuals advance to the Governor’s Cup regional competition, to be held Feb. 10 and 15 at McCracken County High School.
