Carter Named New McCracken County Superintendent

In a unanimous vote during Thursday night’s regularly-called meeting, the McCracken County Public Schools Board of Education selected Steve Carter as the district’s next leader. He will begin on July 1.

Carter, current deputy superintendent of Union County Schools, succeeds Interim Superintendent Heath Cartwright who will retire June 30.

Carter started as a social studies teacher in Crittenden County in 1996 after earning his Bachelor of Arts in History and Education from Western Kentucky University. He’s worked in administration since 2002 after earning his Masters of Arts in Educational Administration from Murray State University.

He served as a school-level administrator in Crittenden from 2002 to 2005, and then at the district-level in Union County from 2005 to the present. As director of pupil personnel and then as deputy superintendent in Union County, Carter led myriad departments including human resources, transportation, building and grounds, security, gifted and talented, Title I and II programs, assessment and curriculum, career and technical education, and more.

Carter was chosen from a highly qualified field following a rigorous selection process that included screening by a selection committee and an interview with board members. He came at the unanimous recommendation of the superintendent search committee.

On March 11, Cartwright was appointed interim superintendent following former superintendent Brian Harper’s resignation March 8. Cartwright will retire next month after 27 years of service in KY public education, including 17 with MCPS.
