Board of Education Meeting Highlights- December 2017
District anticipating increase in state funding based on increased enrollment
McCracken County Schools have seen the 4th largest enrollment growth statewide this year by number of students (113 additional students), and 13th highest by percentage (1.8% growth).
This bump in enrollment should result in additional funding from the state to meet the needs of the district’s growing student population, Director of Pupil Personnel Brian Bowland told board members Thursday night.
Steady growth in grades 1 through 12 appears to have offset the decline in kindergarten enrollment following recent changes to kindergarten age requirements. It’s a testament to the quality of McCracken County Schools, Bowland said, with most of the growth coming from new families moving into the district, or students transferring from neighboring districts.
Board to begin accepting proposals for design of new Lone Oak Middle School
The board gave its approval Thursday night for the district to begin accepting design proposals for a new Lone Oak Middle School building.
The Local Planning Committee (LPC) recently recommended constructing a new LOMS building on property the district already owns off Bleich Road. This new location will put the school close to its athletic fields and help alleviate traffic congestion in the Lone Oak area around the elementary and intermediate schools. LOIS would relocate to the current LOMS building, further following the LPC’s recommendations.
An architect/engineer for the design phase of the project will be chosen in the coming months, based on which proposal offers the best overall value for the district, said Director of Facilities Todd Jackson.
