MCHS Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Campaign- Down For Dinner
Communication is vital to the health of families and individuals. If a family does not actively communicate, their relationships may suffer, and the individual members of the family may face their own challenges from the lack of healthy emotional support.

Concerned with these consequences, the McCracken County High School chapter of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) launched a campaign to combat the issue. The project, Down for Dinner, encourages students attending McCracken County High School to dine with their families once a week for the duration of a month without their devices.

In order to make the dinners comfortable for family members who are not used to traditional family meals, the FCCLA chapter designed “Table Talk” cards. These cards each have conversation starters on them in order to initiate deep and healthy conversation at the dinner table.

Without the distractions of technology and with the presence of all members of a household at the dinner table, families will be able to return to their conversational roots. The hope of the FCCLA chapter through this project is to strengthen ties within families in order to make society better as a whole.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has more than 160,000 members and more than 5,300 chapters from 49 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

Paducah Bank provided frozen treats to McCracken FCCLA members at their September meeting while they launched the new "Down For Dinner" Families First program.  Students are pledging to eat at the family dinner table for 1 night each week without having a cell phone or electronic device for a month.  Members designed and made "Table Talk" conversation cards to help lead the family in meaningful discussions.  FCCLA members learned that family relations can be strengthened through healthy communication practices and removing communication barriers can help families grow closer.
