MCHS Students Named Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program

McCracken County Public Schools is proud to announce that Hope Hodges and Jason Qiu have been named semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit scholarship competition. They will continue to compete for $31 million in National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the spring.

Hope Hodges is the president of the Drama Club, a co-founder of the American Sign Language Club, a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Environmental Club. She is the daughter of John and Shelly Hodges.

Jason Qiu, is currently attending the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University. He is the son of Yunmei Wu and Michael Qiu.

More than 1.5 million students nationwide entered the Merit Program as juniors by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. High scorers were designated Semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of all U.S. high school seniors, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp. In total, just over 16,000 academically talented seniors qualified nationwide.

National Merit Semifinalists will advance to the Finalist level upon completion of additional requirements. They must maintain an outstanding academic record throughout their senior year, be endorsed and recommended by their principal, submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test, and complete a scholarship application detailing their leadership and community activities.
