Happy Feet Equal Learning Feet program coming to Reidland area schools this fall

Beginning this fall, students in need at Reidland Elementary, Intermediate and Middle schools will get fresh kicks thanks to the nonprofit program Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, program partner Shoe Carnival, and program sponsors Rosebower Baptist Church and Southland Baptist Temple.

In the coming weeks Jenny Ison and Marianna Romero, Family Resource and Youth Service Center coordinators for RIS/RMS and RES respectively, will work with teachers in each school to compile a list of students in need of new shoes. Shoe Carnival will then visit the schools and measure each student’s feet for size and help them choose their favorite style and color of shoe. Their shoes will arrive just six weeks later.

Local businesses and community members can sponsor a pair of shoes for a student for just $30 a pair. More information can be found at https://www.happyfeetequalslearningfeet.com/donate.html.

One week into school year, enrollment up in McCracken County Schools

Roughly one week into the 2017-18 school year, districtwide enrollment in McCracken County is up 45 students compared to this time last school year, DPP Brian Bowland told board members Thursday night. This is thanks to modest increases in enrollment across grade levels, as well as a significant increase in preschool enrollment.

Preschool and Elementary Education Director Tina Hayes added that 300 children are already enrolled for preschool this year, nearly 100 more than preschool enrollment this time last year. She commended Heath Elementary and its Principal Lane Cooper, who helped her set up a new preschool classroom at the school in just 24 hours to accommodate the influx of preschoolers in the Heath area.

Thursday night board members approved a contract with engineering firm Sherman Carter Barnhart to design the new bus garage.

Board ratifies petition to close T. Underwood Drive to make way for construction of the new Lone Oak Middle School

Following recommendations from a feasibility study of the new Lone Oak Middle School project, board members ratified a petition to close T. Underwood Drive, which transects the property slated for the new LOMS.

The board is required by law to file the petition with the McCracken County Fiscal Court in order to start the process of closing the road, which must be closed before final construction bid documents can be submitted to KDE for approval. The petition also grants a right of ingress and egress to the County Cemetery now served by T. Underwood Drive in order to designate two parking spaces near the cemetery entrance for visitors of the cemetery to use. A Deed of Easement will be prepared after final approval of the County Fiscal Court and KDE.
