BOE Highlights April 2018 Meeting

Board members recognize students for athletic, academic and artistic achievements
In “the best part of the meeting” Thursday night, board members recognized MCHS senior Samuel Powless, the MCHS Academic Team and the MCHS Boys Basketball team for their outstanding accomplishments this school year.

Out of 300 students representing four countries at the 13th Annual Alltech Vocal Scholarship Competition at the University of Kentucky, Powless placed second in the undergraduate category winning a prize package worth over $75,000. His prize includes a full-tuition scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Music at UK and a one-time, $4,000 stipend from Alltech, as well as $1,000 in cash for being a finalist. He also received an invitation and stipend to study at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Austria for six weeks next summer.

The MCHS Academic Team was also recognized for their impressive number of regional, state and international wins this year, and the MCHS Boys Basketball Team was recognized for its 28-7 season. In their first five seasons as a consolidated team, The Mustangs have 117 wins to just 48 losses, three 2nd District Championships, two Region 1 Championships, and 9-2 overall in the 1st Region Tournament.

Board members approve naming rights for McCracken County High School Library, Hall of Fame and Greenhouses
Board members approved the renewal of several naming rights contracts that will bring the high school $150,000 in the coming years.
Pain Management Resources renewed its contract for the Manchikanti Library, doubling their contribution from $5,000 a year to $10,000 a year for 10 years. River Valley Ag Credit also increased its contributions through its contract for the River Valley Ag Credit Greenhouses from $2,000 a year to $5,000 a year for five years. Paducah Bank also renewed its contract for the Paducah Bank Hall of Fame with a contribution of $5,000 a year for five years.

KDE awards $56,000 in grant funding for critical cafeteria equipment
Reidland Elementary and Reidland Intermediate/Middle schools will soon receive brand new Electrolux Air-O Convection Combination Ovens for their cafeterias, thanks to two, $20,000 Equipment Assistance Grants from the Kentucky Department of Education. These new ovens will increase the school cafeterias’ capacity and efficiency, as well as the variety of foods they’ll be able to serve students. KDE also retroactively awarded a $16,000 reimbursement to Heath Elementary for the Electrolux oven purchased for its cafeteria last year.
