State Releases Assessment Data

Results from the state assessment administered in the spring 2018 show a high graduation rate and a higher percentage of students performing at a proficient or distinguished level and above the state average.

Kentucky is in the process of phasing in a new accountability system, which is scheduled to be fully implemented in the 2018-2019 school year. As a result, schools did not receive an overall numerical score or ranking, though results for individual students still use the customary labels of novice, apprentice, proficient, and distinguished. Students in McCracken County Schools continue to perform significantly above state averages.

State assessment for high school students includes transition readiness, proficiency, and graduation rate.  McCracken County High School (MCHS) four-year graduation rate is 95%.  The average graduation rate in Kentucky is 90.8 percent. The high school transition readiness score is 68.4 compared to the state at 60.9.  Last year, juniors in McCracken County earned an average ACT composite score of 20.6, above the state average of 19.3.

"ACT scores at MCHS continue to be high, and we are very proud of the percentage of McCracken students meeting proficiency in reading and math,” said Brian Harper, superintendent.

McCracken County High School has 97 AP Scholars. Twelve of our 21 AP courses had a 60% or better passage rate. Three AP courses had 100% passage rate, Art, Physics, and Seminar.  The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit for successful performance on the AP Exams.

As early as elementary school, students are introduced to college and career readiness. McCracken County middle school students take a pre-ACT and host events such as the KHEAA College Info Road Show. MCHS has gone above and beyond to make sure students are prepared after they graduate. In 2018, a college and career coach was hired at MCHS, over 30 students are currently placed in internships/apprenticeships, and College/Technical Education classes are teaching soft skills that will help graduates prepare for the work force.

“It is great to see the variety of career and technical education areas that our students are taking part in. The internship program is second to none. We have been working closely with the community to help us better design and promote career opportunities for our students after graduation,” said Harper.

Accountability is based on three indicators at each grade level. Elementary and middle schools use proficiency indicator, separate academic indicator and growth indicator.

The state assessments are one measure of student achievement used by educators in our schools to guide instruction. McCracken County also uses STAR in the elementary and middle schools. STAR Reading, STAR Early Literacy and STAR Math are standardized, computer-adaptive assessments created by Renaissance Learning, Inc., for use in K-12 education.

“Our ultimate goal in McCracken County Schools is to get every student to proficiency, “said Harper. “We are extremely proud of the work that is going on in all of our schools.”
