BOE Highlights Septemebr 2018 Meeting

Board members recognize Bob Foster, 2017-18 KECSAC Outstanding Community Partner of the Year
Thursday night board members recognized Bob Foster for his outstanding service on behalf of State Agency Children at the McCracken Regional School. His recognition by the Kentucky Educational Collaborative for State Agency Children (KECSAC) as Outstanding Community Partner of the Year was well deserved, DPP Brian Bowland told board members Thursday. He’s worked with students at the Regional School for years, starting a music program for the kids, and often continuing to work with students after they leave school to help them transition into adult life. He’s a big reason as to why this program was named a Program of Distinction in 2016 and 2017, Bowland said.

Board presents local veteran with long-awaited Heath High School Diploma
More than 50 years after cutting his senior year of high school short to join the U.S. Army, Ernest Edward Watts, Jr. got to don a graduation cap, move its tassel to the left, and hold in his hands his very own Heath High School diploma.
Watts left Heath High School to enlist in the Army in September of 1964. After being trained as a diesel mechanic at Fort Benning and Fort Knox, Watts completed several transportation assignments across Germany for the next three years until the fall of 1968 when he received orders for Vietnam. There he continued to serve his country through work mine sweeping, repairing the Army motor pool, repelling from helicopters and handling explosives, among other work. After being wounded in Vietnam, he arrived home in Jan. of 1969 and was honorably discharged in April that same year. Soon after Watts was hired by Illinois Central Railroad where he worked for the next 35 years before retiring.
Watts accepted his diploma Thursday night to a standing ovation.
“I want to thank this board,” Watts said to board members, family, and friends gathered in the boardroom for the occasion. “They don’t really realize the hole they have filled in my life. Education is the most important thing for our young people.”
