Two McCracken County High School Students Named Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit® Scholarship Program

McCracken County Public Schools is proud to announce that two seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit scholarship competition. Lillian Swanz and Katelyn Woodard will continue to compete for $31 million in National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in spring 2019.

Lillian Swanz is a member of the Mustangs Soccer Team, National Honor Society, HOSA- Future Health Professionals, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is an AP Scholar of Distinction and a Governor’s Scholar. She is the daughter of  Jane Wells and Peter Swanz.

Katelyn Woodard is a member of the MCHS Academic Team, Future Problem Solving Team, Future Business Leaders of America, BETA Club, National Honor Society, and Student Government. . She is an AP Scholar of Distinction and a Governor’s Scholar. She is the daughter of Jennifer and Darrell Woodard.

More than 1.6 million students nationwide entered the Merit Program as juniors by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. High scorers were designated Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp. In total, just over 16,000 academically talented seniors qualified nationwide.

National Merit Semifinalists will advance to the Finalist level upon completion of additional requirements. They must maintain an outstanding academic record throughout their senior year, be endorsed and recommended by their principal, submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test, and complete a scholarship application detailing their leadership and community activities.
