Commonwealth Middle College partnership to continue for one more year
School board members approved the continuation of the district’s partnership with Commonwealth Middle College, allowing McCracken County juniors currently in the program to continue through their senior year in 2017-18.

The Middle College, a partnership of McCracken and Marshall County schools and West Kentucky Community and Technical College, was created through a generous grant from the Lay Family Foundation. The program has been of great service to students of Marshall and McCracken counties by helping them get acclimated to college life, earn college credit, and get on a path to a college degree while still in high school.

The three partnering school systems met recently to assess the Middle College agreement, and together decided that next year’s senior class should be the last. Though the Middle College has served McCracken and Marshall county students well, the need for it has waned in recent years. Increased opportunities at McCracken County High School, including the Kentucky Dual Credit Scholarship program, expanded AP offerings and the Educational Co-op program allowing students to leave the high school to attend classes on the WKCTC campus, are now comparable to the opportunities offered by the Middle College.
McCracken County High School Graduation Date set for Sunday, May 21 at 5 p.m.
After some discussion, school board members voted to approve a somewhat unconventional graduation date — a Sunday. This year the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s state tournaments for track and tennis fall on the Saturday of graduation weekend. McCracken will have teams and almost 20 seniors competing in the out-of-town tournaments. A Sunday evening ceremony was suggested in order to prevent the seniors from having to choose between two memorable moments: competing at the state level, or walking at graduation with their peers.
Commencement ceremonies will be at McCracken’s Marquette Stadium, and will be relocated to the Strawberry Hills Pharmacy Arena in the case of inclement weather.
