Barton Christmas, MCHS junior, voted Governor of YMCA Ky Youth Assembly
More than 1,000 of his peers voted Barton Christmas, McCracken County High School junior, to be Governor of next year’s YMCA Kentucky Youth Assembly (KYA). The position is the highest a student can attain in the yearly program that is the premier event in a series of YMCA programs emphasizing citizenship. Students in the YMCA KYA are enthusiastic about the importance of service to both their local communities and to the state through direct public service as well as student government. On Thursday, the Board of Education recognized Christmas for his selection and the responsibility he will undertake in the coming year to fundraise, lead service projects and to spread the positive message of KYA.

Schools receive combined $17,340 in Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grants
The Board voted to approve the receipt of funding for four Lowe’s grants, one each for Reidland Middle School, Reidland Intermediate School, Lone Oak Intermediate School and Lone Oak Middle School. The grants, ranging from $3,120 to $4,995, are meant to help pay for construction and materials of school-based projects. Reidland Intermediate is renovating a performing arts stage. The money will help Reidland Middle plant a new school garden and rehab a greenhouse. Lone Oak Intermediate will install a new deck and pot plants as an outdoor classroom, and Lone Oak Middle is installing a new outdoor garden.

MCHS receives Poetry Out Loud grant
The district was awarded $1,300 from the Kentucky Arts Council to implement Poetry Out Loud, a poetry recitation competition held once again at McCracken County High School. The money pays for program costs and for local artist Samuel “Snacks” Hawkins to provide workshops focused on public presentation, suggestions for memorization and interpretation of poetic structure. A district-wide culminating competition was set for Thursday night at the high school’s C-Plant Performing Arts Center, but weather postponed the event. The new date and time are to be determined. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition funded by the National Endowments for the Arts, The Poetry Foundation and state agencies such as the Kentucky Arts Council. The district winner goes on to a state competition and could go on to a national competition in Washington, D.C.
