Brown Wins Governor's Cup Science Title

Ethan Brown, a McCracken County High School student, won the high school state science title at the Governor's Cup competition for high schools and middle schools, held Saturday through Monday at the Galt House in Louisville.

Brown scored 41 out of a possible 50 on the science assessment test, getting past Zach Raich of Russell High School, who scored a 40, and Shashank Bhatt of Paul L. Dunbar High School, who scored a 39. Brown also won the Region 1 and District 3 science titles earlier this year.

McCracken County placed eighth in the team future problem solving competition.

In the overall team standings, McCracken County placed 12th, St. Mary was 15th and Mayfield tied for 31st. Russell High School won the state Governor's Cup title.

In the middle school state competition, Heath placed second in future problem solving, while Calloway County was third.

Area individuals who placed among the top 10 were Paige Kight of Paducah, who placed third in the arts and humanities assessment test with a score of 41, and Owen Cody of Lone Oak, who placed seventh in the social studies assessment test with a score of 40.

In the overall team standings, Calloway County tied for ninth, Heath was 11th, Paducah tied for 20th and Lone Oak tied for 29th. Johnson County Middle won the state competition.

Governor's Cup is an academic competition held at the district, regional and state levels. It features eight competitions: quick recall and future problem solving, which are team competitions, and assessment tests for individuals in mathematics, science, social studies, language arts and arts and humanities along with a composition competition.
