Board recognizes four National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists from McCracken County High School
Four MCHS seniors — David Dodd, Drew Schofield, Sean Sieczka, and Ethan Brown — have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and will continue to compete for $32 million in National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in spring 2018.

More than 1.5 million students nationwide entered the Merit Program as juniors by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. High scorers like Dodd, Schofield, Sieczka and Brown were designated Semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of all U.S. high school seniors, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Just over 16,000 seniors qualified as semifinalists nationwide.

The high school’s four semifinalists will advance to the Finalist level upon completion of additional requirements. They must maintain an outstanding academic record throughout their senior year, be endorsed and recommended by their principal, submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test, and complete a scholarship application detailing their leadership and community activities.

Board honors Thomas Womble as a graduate of Lone Oak High School, 46 years after Womble missed the LOHS Class of ’71 graduation to serve in the Vietnam War
Over 46 years ago, Thomas Womble missed his graduation with the Lone Oak High School Class of ’71 to instead enlist in the U.S. Army and serve his country. Thursday night board members awarded Womble his hard-earned and long-awaited diploma.

Womble now joins a league of veterans who have received their diplomas through Kentucky’s High School Diploma Program, which allows veterans who left school to enroll in the military and served during World War II, Korea and Vietnam to receive official high school diplomas from their home schools.

Womble served two years in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Vietnam War. After completing his tour with the Army he joined the Navy for an additional eight years — three served on a helicopter and five as a flight engineer. Womble then transferred his skills learned in the military into civilian work as an auto mechanic.

“I’m glad to get it after all these years,” Womble told board members. “I’ve had my GED for a while, but this diploma means more.”
