BOE Meeting Highlights
Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland Middle baseball and softball teams to consolidate, play under McCracken County name

Come 2018-19, McCracken’s middle school students interested in playing baseball or softball will play with grade-level peers on district-wide 6th, 7th and 8th grade McCracken County teams, rather than on school teams at Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland Middle.

Board members approved consolidating the district’s three middle school baseball and softball teams at Thursday night’s regular meeting, following a presentation from Activities Director Kris Garrett.

The middle and high school coaches are confident this move will increase overall participation numbers, improve safety by ensuring kids are playing at their age-level, and better prepare these young student athletes to play for the high school team in the future, Garrett said.

“As much or hopefully more students will be able to play ball this way,” Garrett said in response to some concerns raised by board members. “And the response from parents has been positive so far.”

McCracken Preschool receives $150,000 grant to support professional development, public-private partnerships

The Kentucky Department of Education awarded McCracken Preschool a $149,866 grant to support public/private partnerships between McCracken’s preschools and local childcare centers.

In the interest of sustainability, McCracken Preschool’s plan for the Preschool Partnership Tier 2 grant will invest primarily in professional development for the county’s childcare providers, both public and private. McCracken Preschool and project partner Easter Seals will take the lead this year in organizing trainings, workshops and seminars for teachers and aids from McCracken Preschool, Easter Seals and roughly 10 other qualifying private childcare providers.

The knowledge gained and relationships developed among local childcare providers will benefit McCracken County’s children for years to come, far beyond the life of the grant.
