The conference held at Lone Oak Elementary featured leading national educators, Alan November, senior partner and founder of November Learning, and Todd Whitaker, Indiana University professor and well-known author, District administrators and teachers also presented sessions on both days. This is the fourth consecutive year that the district has won the award. According to Kentucky’s Interim Commissioner of Education, Elaine Farris, “McCracken County is certainly deserving of this honor. Your district’s performance on state assessments, low dropout rates and recognition on the state, regional and national level make it a natural choice. ”SchoolMatch is a national consulting and research company that collects and manages information about public and private K-12 school systems and schools. To determine the award winners, SchoolMatch compiled information from county assessors, county auditors, state taxing authorities, state departments of education and others. Across the country, SchoolMatch found that only 2,436 of 15,571 districts met the criteria. In Kentucky, only 18 Kentucky districts were selected out of the 174 school districts to receive the 2009 “What Parents Want” Award.

students create Pinwheels for Peace Reidland Elementary fifth grade students are working with their teachers, Diane Bach (GT Teacher), Deborah Talbert (Art Teacher) and Anne Hancock (5th Grade Language Arts Teacher) to create Pinwheels for Peace. Pinwheels for Peace is a Literacy/Art Project that began in 2005 as a way for students to express their thoughts on peace and how they can spread peace. Each student receives one sheet of paper that will be made into a pinwheel. On one side of the pinwheel they write their feelings/thoughts about peace, and on the other side they draw to visually express their ideas. The teachers are collaborating on the writing and art portions of the project. Several quotes dealing with peace are hung around the classroom, and classes discuss what they mean to each of the students. Students also discuss random acts of kindness that each can do to brighten someone’s day. The students brainstorm their ideas on peace and write ideas on the board. From there, the students are given a chance to write their own thoughts. The students then work with their art teacher to visually express their ideas on peace.
